Poem- I wish i could sleep through the war
I wish I could sleep through the war!The pain is so constant, the anger so severe.I just wish I could just sleep through the war.My child, My baby, feels like he has been kidnapped from me.He faces such dangers that none of us sees.My cries, my pleas seem to get me nowhere.I want to yell, “Bring Our Troops Home”If only Mr. Bush hadn’t sent our troops thereIf he only had a child servingThen he would know our pain.I wish I could just sleep through the war.The days go by not a word I hear,My heart is always in fear. A call or a knockcould set off my tears.I wish I could just sleep through the war!

TPCASTT: Poem Analysis Method: title, paraphrase, connotation, diction, attitude, tone, shift(s), title revisited and theme
T
I think the Title of poem means:
That the poet is anti-war and the poem will be about someone dreading war.
P
Paraphrase parts of the Poem
Since my poem is long I will write a summary.
My poem is from the perspective of a mother who wants her son to come home from the war. She talks about how war is such a bad thing with this line “The pain is so constant, the anger so severe”. She sees the war as kidnapping her son from her, and all she wants is for him to come home. She is in constant fear of losing her son with lines like “My heart is always in fear”. “A call or a knock could set off my tears”. This is definitely an anti-war poem.

C
Connotation of some of the words—changing literal meaning to implied or associated values
“I wish I could sleep through the war”. Poet wants to forget about the war and act like it never happened.
“The pain is so constant, the anger so severe”. Poet is saying that when war happens, the pain is constant, and the anger severe.
“My cries, my pleas, seem to get me nowhere.” Poet is crying out for her son to come home, but nobody will listen to her.
A
Attitude—What is the attitude of the author, characters, or yourself?
Poet: Anti-War
Woman in poem: She is self-centered, only cares about her son coming home, doesn’t care if the war is for a good cause.
Myself: I like the poem, it make me feel sad though
S
Shift—At first we think or feel one way—then there is a shift: identify the shifts and explain them
Shift 1: “My child, my baby, feels like he has been kidnapped from me”. This is when I realized that the poem was anti-war and that the mother is sad.
Shift 2: “If he only had a child serving then he would know our pain”. The second shift shows that the war affects more than just the mother in the poem.
Shift 3: “My heart is always in fear. A call or a knock could set off my tears”. The last shift shows the mother always being on the verge of shock.
T
Title revisited—any new insights on meaning or significance of title.
I thought it was titled plainly, the title was anti-war and the poem was definitely anti-war also.

T
Theme or Author’s Purpose
The poet’s purpose for writing this poem was to get the attention of other families who want their sons to come home from the war.
